Futerro is now part of the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) to engage in the reflection in finding innovative solutions on the theme of sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint.

What is the Renewable Carbon Initiative?

The Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) was initiated by nova-Institute after observing the struggles of the chemical and materials industry facing the enormous challenges in meeting the climate goals set by the European Union and the sustainability expectations held by societies around the globe.

In the energy industry, decarbonisation is possible by finding other energies (solar, wind power...). But as organic chemistry is based on the use of carbon, we cannot decarbonate it. Therefore, we need to find alternative sources of carbon to shift towards a more sustainable and climate-friendly industry. We call them “renewable carbon.”

The aim of the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) is to support and speed up the transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon for all organic chemicals and materials.

Fossil carbon shall be completely substituted by renewable carbon, which is carbon from alternative sources: biomass, CO2, and recycling. This is the only way for chemicals and plastics to become sustainable, climate-friendly and part of the circular economy – part of the future!

Futerro and RCI: a matching vision

As an innovative company wishing to spearhead the European bioeconomy by making bioplastics, our vision fits perfectly with the RCI’s.

Thanks to photosynthesis, the plant captures CO2 to transform it into sugar and our role is to make biopolymers with it. With our polymer made from biomass we help our customers to start their ecological transition.

Futerro's message today is simple: the industry has spent decades extracting carbon from the soil and injecting it into the air and the environment. It is now time to reverse the process and completely reinvent our petrochemicals to a biochemical one, of which biopolymers are a key solution and a first step.

As circularity is another main challenge for our future, Futerro has also developed a technology able to chemically recycle PLA and get back to a virgin raw material: the lactic acid.

Futerro is the only bioplastic manufacturer that can provide companies with PLA full life cycle solutions.

A great partnership for a better future

By entering the RCI, Futerro will benefit from a unique network of pioneers in the sustainable chemical industry to:

  • share knowledge and expertise,
  • profit from the experiences of other pioneers on the way to a sustainable future,
  • participate to collective advocacy work to create a supportive regulatory and economic framework,
  • get a support in finding solutions for our specific problems on the way to our renewable carbon goals.
