9th PLA World Congress 2026
Geoffroy Delvinquier, Public Affairs Manager at Futerro, spoke at the 9th PLA World Congress, organised by Renewable Carbon Plastics Magazine, on global policy and regulatory developments for bio-based plastics and PLA.
His intervention explored how regulatory frameworks for bioplastics are evolving beyond the European Union. While the European Union has long been the world’s regulatory compass for sustainability, the legislative landscape for bio-based and compostable plastics is now accelerating in the rest of the world.
Across Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East, new policy approaches are emerging that increasingly recognise the strategic role of the bioeconomy and bio‑based materials.
The key takeaway?
“Europe built the foundational model, and others have improved upon it: the rest of the world is no longer simply following Europe; they are innovating, adapting, and in many cases moving ahead. The global regulatory landscape for bioplastics and PLA is becoming richer, more diverse, and more dynamic. If it remains open to learning from the front runners emerging worldwide, Europe has much to gain from this.” Geoffroy Delvinquier, Public Affairs Manager at Futerro.
The discussion highlighted the importance for European policymakers and stakeholders to remain attentive to international regulatory developments, both to preserve Europe’s leadership and to ensure that future EU frameworks remain competitive, coherent and innovation‑friendly.
